Cabela’s dangerous hunts 2009 review
Okay, so its 2009, and you are looking for a new and exciting hunting game to play. Where to start? If you are really into hunting games, then you have probably heard of the Cabela series. If you are into the dangerous hunts game, then the newer one is certainly something to check out. So is it a dud, or is it a sweet find?
Here’s my take on it The tagline for this game is “be afraid, be very afraid” and this is certainly the case. As a player you will be located in the most dangerous spots around, hunting the most dangerous animals around. You’re going to be tackling lions, grizzly bears, tigers, and more! You’ll be stuck in the midst of rapid streams and freezing avalanches, sweating it up in the jungles of India, and fighting your way past animal stampedes. You name it, you have to get through it.
There are times when you will be attacked by an animal. If you fail to shoot it in time, you are going to have to put your fists up at the last moment for some wrestling. In this game you are going to be playing Flint Abrahams, as he travels around trying to bag as many animals as possible. You will soon discover however, that Flint is far from perfect, as something will go wrong (very wrong) nearly every single place he goes.
This game won’t play out much like a normal hunting game; in fact it will seem more like an adventure game. You will spend a lot of your time traveling through the wilderness area and searching through your maps looking for your prey. Once you get to that certain spot though, the prey will be ridiculously easy to spot. Its even easier if you use the games “Hunters sense” feature. Once you find the prey, you wont have to worry about luring him in, as generally you will just wander around shooting everything in your path. That’s what you will most likely have to do anyways, as in the game there is a time limit.
In career mode, you will first start of in the heart of Russia, as you shoot down your first task (a red deer) this will prove to be ridiculously easy, as the deer will walk right in front of you. Afterwards, you will get the chance at using the manual combat mode, as a huge bear will come out and injure your partner. It goes without saying, that you will quickly get the hang of things. These basic mechanisms will stay with you for the entirety of the game. The problem with this is that it will get boring. Kill after kill it’s the same process. Moreover, each animal seems to just die, in the same format, there are no real special effects, and there isn’t much of a rewarding feeling… it just gets very monotonous. As for the combat mode, it’s also not that great. Firstly, you yourself cannot choose to fight in such a way ie the game will put you in the combat mode. What’s worse, you just don’t know when the game will put you in said mode.
There is another cool feature which is called the adrenaline boost, which will pretty much stop time, and bring everything around you to a halt. That said, this may also seem like a cheap and unfair way to deal with the enemy animals.
In terms of environment, the game looks alright but there are definite glitches. For one, it will seem as though you will come across seemingly random invisible “barriers”, and sometimes you won’t be able to trek through a barrier in your path. Moreover, there is not a single body of water in the entire game that goes more than ankle-deep. How is that for ridiculous? On another note, our hunter flint can’t run! He can only walk, which serves as a real annoyance during certain missions where you are only allowed to tranquilize the animals because you have to survive for the few minutes that they are still up and about.
Another ridiculous thing is that this game puts virtually every single animal out there as if they are out to get you. Elephants and hyenas will go out of their way to chase you down (something very unlike their species)
In closing, this game just does not quite cut it, its no masterpiece. I give it a 5/10.
